TONIGHT AT SPOKANE'S CITY COUNCIL MEETING MANY BUSINESS
OWNERS ASKED TO REPEAL THE CITY'S SICK AND SAFE LEAVE
ORDINANCE WHICH MANDATES SMALLER BUSINESSES GIVE EMPLOYEES
3 PAID SICK DAYS AND LARGER BUSINESSES GIVE 5 PAID
It will require employers to adjust their policies
THE PASSING OF A STATEWIDE INITIATIVE LAST WEEK.
MEANS THAT EMPLOYERS WOULD HAVE TO COMPLY WITH SPOKANE'S
ORDINANCE IN 2017.
AND THE STATEWIDE INITIATIVE IN 2018...
To spend time, money and effort to adjust their policies
now and again when the sunset provision takes place.
I simply ask that the council holds off until we see
what 1433 does.
BUSINESS OWNERS ALSO BROUGHT UP CONCERN ABOUT HOW
THE ORDINANCE IS WRITTEN.
I've spent many hours trying to interpret the ordinance
as it applies to our organizations policy as we are
currently written but there are many unanswered questions
regarding parts of it.
AFTER MORE THAN AN HOUR AND A HALF OF TESTIMONY.
CITY COUNCIL DID NOT REPEAL THE ORDINANCE.
THEY DID HOWEVER VOTE IN FAVOR OF MAKING SOME AMENDMENTS
TO MAKE IT EASIER FOR BUSINESSES TO IMPLEMENT.
Part of the language in here says an employer will
be in full compliance with this chapter by allowing
shift swapping or the use of PTO.
THE CITY COUNCIL ALSO ADDED A SUNSET CLAUSE.
This means our ordinance would go off the books when
1433 goes into effect.
