THE LABOR DAY WEEKEND ALSO MARKS THE BEGINNING OF
HIGHER FLOWS IN THE SPOKANE RIVER AS AVISTA BEGINS
DRAWING DOWN LAKE COEUR D' ALENE.
KXLY FOUR'S JEFF HUMPHREY SHOWS US HOW A SERIES OF
DAMS ON THE SPOKANE RIVER KEEPS THE WATERFRONT FUN
COMING EVEN THROUGH A LONG DRY SUMMER.
55;28 right now, just 700 cubic feet of water is flowing
down the spokane river every second.
in places you can now walk across it and barely get
your belly button wet.
but there would be even less water in the river if
not for the post falls dam.
AND THAT'S BECAUSE LEFT TO IT'S OWN DEVICES, LAKE
COEUR ALENE WOULD GET SO LOW IN THE SUMMER TIME THAT
IT WOULD STOP POURING WATER INTO THE SPOKANE RIVER.
INSTEAD OF WAVE RUNNERS, THE ONLY FUN YOU'D FIND DOWNSTREAM
OF THE LAKE IS WADING THROUGH SOME MUDDY PUDDLES.
BUT WITH THE HELP OF THE POST FALLS DAM, THERE'S A
LOT OF WATER FRONT FUN.
TRACY STOUT/FUN UNLIMITED 43;40 beautiful homes on
the river, my goodness, we get so many people talking
they can't believe the view on the river that and
then with the boating, they have such a fun experience
because of the tubing and wakeboarding and skiing
THE DAMS ALSO HELPS TAME THE RIVER FURTHER DOWNSTREAM
THIS YEAR, FOR THE FIRST TIME ,PADDLERS WERE ABLE
TO USE THEIR BOARDS IN THE SLACK WATER NEAR RIVERFRONT
FILE PKG 7/15/16 pkg 00;53 as soon as the city built
this launch here in downtown spokane, we had the vision
immediately 00;59 W12 22
THIS SUMMER 1800 PEOPLE RENTED PADDLE BOARDS FROM
TARA AND KEITH QUINN ON THE SPOKANE RIVER.
IT WAS A SHORT, BUT SUCCESSFUL SEASONW13 22
BUT NOW WITH THE DRAWDOWN COMING, THE CURRENT WILL
ONCE AGAIN BE MOVING TOO FAST FOR PEOPLE TO BE IN
57;49 avista's license requires the untility to draw
down the lake to its winter elevation by december
by the time that happens, more than 13 billion gallons
of water will have spilled over the falls or through
our power houses and thanks to a la nina weather pattern,
it's likely a lot more is coming.
