SPOKANE, Wash. -

The kids are back in school and it's time to shop. But, while you can really save money on some things in September, other things should wait until closer to the holidays.

FatWallet.com made a list of some the best September bargains.

-Travel. September is "shoulder season." With kids back in school, families are staying home. You can find great airfare and hotel prices, as travel companies try to attract as many people as possible. You can also plan ahead and book your holiday travel. With more options available, you can shop around for the best price.

-Appliances and mattress sets. This year's models will go on sale, in some cases up to 60% off. You won't see prices this low until Black Friday.

-Laptops. Students snatched up laptops as they headed back to school, but stores need to get rid of this year's models and make room for next year's before the holidays. You can find great deals on computers right now.

-Summer items. Everything from patios to grills to above-ground pools need to go to make room for things like Christmas decorations. If you are even thinking about replacing those items for next summer, buy now. The 2017 version of you will thank you.

Now, what not to buy. You should hold off on anything that's typically a big-ticket item for the holidays. Prices on things like jewelry, large tvs and gaming consoles will drop dramatically between Black Friday and Christmas. Wait on those things, but set price alerts for the holiday season.
