DID YOU GET A LETTER FROM THE SPOKANE SCHOOL DISTRICT,
SAYING YOUR CHILD'S SCHOOL ISN'T MEETING STANDARDS?
13-THOUSAND PARENTS DID.
IT TELLS THEM, THAT IF THEY WANT TO TRANSFER SCHOOLS.
THEY CAN - BUT, YOU HAVE TO ACT QUICKLY.
KXLY-FOUR'S JOHN HENDRICKS WORKING FOR YOU TONIGHT.
JOHN WHAT DOES THIS LETTER MEAN?
THE SCHOOL DISTRICT TOLD ME TODAY JUST BECAUSE YOU
GOT THIS LETTER DOESN'T MEAN YOUR CHILD'S SCHOOL IS
ANY WORSE OFF THAN IT WAS SEVERAL YEARS AGO.
THE DISTRICT ACTUALLY SAYS SCHOOLS HAVE MADE SIGNIFICANT
IMPROVEMENTS OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS.
AS KIDS PREPARE TO HEAD BACK TO SCHOOL.
MANY BEING ASKED IF THEY WANT TO TRANSFER.
THE SPOKANE SCHOOL DISTRICT SENDING OUT A LETTER TO
13-THOUSAND PARENTS FROM 29 SCHOOLS.
This letter does not say your child is going to a
bad school? No, it really doesn't it says there may
be some area's for growth.
but we all have areas for growth.
SCHOOL DISTRICTS ACROSS THE STATE WERE REQUIRED TO
SEND IT IF THEY HAD SCHOOLS THAT DID NOT MEET ADEQUATE
YEARLY PROGRESS AND MEET NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND STANDARDS.
DOCTOR LORNA SPEAR IN SPOKANE SAYS SINCE NO CHILD
LEFT BEHIND STANDARDS WERE ADOPTED IN 2001 THE SCHOOL
DISTRICT HAS MADE PROGRESS BUT SAYS A 100-PERCENT
PASS RATE FOR STATE TESTS IS UNREALISTIC.
Some of the schools have actually shown a lot of growth
over this same time, but
they haven't shown that 100-percent
of students meeting standards.
THE LETTER EXPLAINS THE STATE'S SITUATION AND ASKS
IF PARENTS WANT TO TRANSFER YOUR CHILD TO A BETTER
THE LETTER HAS MANY OF YOU TALKING ON OUR KXLY-FACEBOOK
Jenn Ferguson WROTE I got a letter for my 1st grader,
but I am not going to move her from Cooper since the
other school listed had lower scores, plus we love
the teachers at Cooper.
Nicole Warner WROTE I will give her teacher for this
year a chance before taking measures such as transferring.
THE DISTRICT SAYS THE BEST THING TO DO IS IF YOU ARE
THINKING OF TRANSFERRING.
CALL YOUR CHILD'S SCHOOL.
It's good for parents to question how's my school
doing and the best source for information is from
the building principal.
OF THE 13-THOUSAND LETTERS SENT OUT.
ABOUT 90 STUDENTS HAVE REQUESTED A TRANSFER.
IF YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT MOVING YOUR KID TO A BETTER
YOU HAVE UNTIL AUGUST 26TH TO RETURN THIS FORM.
REPORTING LIVE TONIGHT.
