THE SPOKANE SHERIFF'S OFFICE
IS GETTING TWO MORE HELICOPTERS...
...TO ADD TO ITS AIR ONE PROGRAM.
COURTESY OF THE U-S ARMY.
KXLY4'S JEFF HUMPHREY IS LIVE AT FELTS FIELD.
WHERE THE MILITARY SURPLUS CHOPPERS WILL HELP FIGHT
AND SAVE LIVES.
SINCE HELICOPTERS DON'T GLIDE VERY A WELL.
A MECHANICAL PROBLEM CAN BE VERY RISKY FOR THE PEOPLE
THAT'S WHY THEY NEED REGULAR MAINTENANCE AND SO ONE
OF THESE NEW KIOWA'S WILL ACT AS AIR 1'S BACK UP WHEN
ITS OUT FOR SERVICE.
IT'LL BE A TAG TEAM APPROACH TO HAVING A HELICOPTER
WHEN EVER THE SPOKANE-COEUR D' ALENE AREA NEEDS ONE.
THE U-S ARMY'S HANDED OVER A PAIR OF GENTLY USED KIOWAS
AND ONE OF THEM IS GOING TO BE USED STRICTLY FOR SPARE
OZZIE 08;56 one of the helicopters we're receiving
will be cannibalized for parts, because parts are
very, very expensive and the other will be held in
reserve so we still have a helicopter we can put in
the air 09;07
THE DONATED HELICOPTERS WERE PULLING DUTY IN PLACES
LIKE IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN.
NOW THEIR PEACE- TIME MISSION WILL BE FIGHTING CRIME.
AIR 1 ROBS CROOKS OF THEIR NIGHT-TIME HIDING SPOTS
WITH ITS FORWARD LOOKING INFA RED CAMERA AND 30 MILLION
CANDLEPOWER SPOT LIGHT.
OZZIE 09;55 we've actually had air 1 save the lives
of officers and sheriff's deputies on the ground because
they were able to spot suspects hiding where the officer
or deputy couldn't see them 10;05
AIR 1'S ALSO AN INVALUABLE TOOL DURING PURSUITS.
WHEN CHARLIE WALLACE SHOT TWO SHERIFF'S DEPUTIES TWO
YEARS AGO, AIR 1 KEPT PACE WITH THE STOLEN HONDA AND
CUT OFF THE GUNMAN'S AVENUES OF ESCAPE.
OZZIE 11;34 so air 1 was able to keep good control
on where he was and give accurate data as far as where
he was going so we could set up spike strips and things
like that to stop him 11;44
AND THANKS TO VOLUNTEER PILOTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS FOR
CDA AND KOOTENAI COUNTY AIR-1 IS STILL A GOOD DEAL
OZZIE 12;19 we have partnerships with private companies
that donate time, mechanic services.
we have partners through out the region that pay into
the fund to to keep the price down for the citizens
of the entire region12;33
THE AIR-1 PROGRAM IS MAKING A NAME FOR ITSELF IN THE
AIRBORNE LAW ENFORCEMENT WORLD AND WHY KING COUNTY
JUST DONATED ONE OF ITS OLD SPOTLIGHTS FOR THE BACK
UP HELICOPTER THAT ARRIVED HERE AT FELTS FIELD ON
THE AIR SUPPORT UNIT HOPES TO HAVE IT UP AND FLYING
BY THE END OF SEPTEMBER.
REPORTING AT FELTS FIELD, JEFF HUMPHREY, KXLY FOUR.
