COPPER THEFT IS ALL TOO COMMON IN SPOKANE COUNTY.
AND EARLY THIS MORNING A RADIO TOWER WAS THE TARGET.
IT'S ON TOP OF BEACON HILL IN EAST SPOKANE.
AND IS MAINTAINED BY KXLY ALTHOUGH IT'S NOT ONE OF
OUR RADIO STATIONS.
OUR CAITI CURREY SHOWS US THE DAMAGE.
SITTING HIGH ABOVE THE CITY IS THIS TRANSMISSION SITE.
WHERE LAST NIGHT THIEVES BROKE IN CAUSING THOUSANDS
OF DOLLARS IN DAMAGES.
AROUND THIS MORNING THE RADIO STATION KSPO 106.5
HAD REALIZED THEY HAD GONE OFF AIR.
THEY SENT AN ENGINEER UP TO THE TRANSMISSION SITE
TO SEE WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS.
It was all open.
The doors were open, the gates were open
RIGHT AWAY MARLIN JACKSON COULD TELL THIS WAS GOING
TO BE A LOT OF WORK GETTING THINGS UP AND RUNNING.
It was vandalized, they cut some copper out of the
power box and took some transmission line.
WHERE THE THIEVES LIKELY GOT OFF WITH LESS THAN 100
DOLLARS IN COPPER.
THE COST OF BEING OFF AIR, THE URGENT LABOR TO REPAIR
DAMAGES, AS WELL AS REPLACING THE COPPER.
WILL COSTS THE RADIO STATION IN THE THOUSANDS.
IN ADDITION TO KSPO THIEVES ALSO BROKE INTO THE NEW
SPOKANE COUNTY RADIO SITE.
STEALING LAP TOPS AND OTHER VALUABLE EQUIPMENT INSIDE.
ESTIMATED TO COST THE COUNTY IN THE TENS-OF THOUSANDS.
JACKSON SAYS HE THINKS THESE THIEVES HAD EXPERIENCE.
THEY KNEW EXACTLY WHAT TO LOOK FOR.
The locks are hardened but they were able to cut through
those, and then the lock on the kspo building is inside
a container where it's really hard to get a cutter
in there, I'm not really sure how they were able to
SINCE THIS IS A FEDERALLY REGULATED SITE THE FBI WILL
BE ASSISTING IN THE INVESTIGATION.
REPORTING IN SPOKANE, CAITI CURREY KXLY 4 NEWS.
