MEANWHILE, THE CARLTON COMPLEX BURNING NEARBY HAS
NOW REACHED 81 PERCENT CONTAINMENT.
THE FIRE HAS BURNED JUST OVER 250 THOUSAND ACRES IN
THE COMPLEX FIRE WAS STARTED BY LIGHTNING ON JULY
SINCE THEN, IT HAS CAUSED MAJOR DEVESTATION IN THE
COUNTY, CONSUMING APPROXIMATELY 300 HOMES.
KXLY 4'S ALEX LE FRIEC IS IN OKANOGAN COUNTY...
HE SPOKE WITH A MAN WHO'S MOVING ON WITH HIS LIFE,
JUST DAYS AFTER HIS HOME WAS DESTROYED.
Two weeks ago Jim Otis lost everything he owned in
the Carlton Complex fire.
But just like the city of Pateros that he lived in,
he says he will rebuild and move on.
This is all that was left when I came back.
WE FIRST MET JIM OTIS TWO WEEKS AGO AT THE RED CROSS
SHELTER IN CHELAN.
HE WAS SLEEPING IN HIS TRUCK AFTER BEING EVACUATED
FROM HIS HOME IN PATEROS.
I grabbed what little stuff I could out of the house,
a little bit of clothes and some other things, and
evacuated to the fire department.
AFTER FINDING NOTHING AT HIS HOME BUT ASH AND RUBBLE,
HE'S DECIDED TO START THE NEXT CHAPTER OF HIS LIFE
I'm back today basically cleaning out what I could
out of the trailor, scrape through nothing really
left to salvage.
I did find my father sharpening stone that he taught
me how to sharpen knives with when I was like 9 years
old so that was really a nice find there.
HE SAYS FRIENDS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS HAVE LENT A
HELPING HAND AT EVERY TURN.
I connected with a childhood friend.
He called me up and said I could have a place to stay.
Just through the generosity of my friends, I have
a friend in Orville that helped me, I have a friend
in Alaska that helped me.
Big shout out to them.
They've really helped me out and it's just stuff.
AND BELEIVE IT OR NOT, OTIS SAYS THIS IS FAR FROM
THE WORSE THING THAT'S EVER HAPPENED TO HIM.
3 years ago I died of an SCA for 15 minutes, sudden
I had to be shocked 3 times, had a left side stroke,
I bounced back from that so there's worse days.
GOOD LUCK IN YAKIMA JIM, AND BE CAREFUL.
IT CAN GET HOT DOWN THERE.
