IN SPOKANE COUNTY.
OVER 50 WILDFIRES BURNED
IN THE MONTH OF JULY.
KEEPING FIRE CREWS ON THE AIR AND ON THE GROUND VERY
KXLY4'S KYLEE CRUZ IS LIVE WITH A LOOK AT HOW THIS
FIRE SEASON COMPARES TO PREVIOUS ONES.
11,000 ACRES WERE BURNED IN SPOKANE COUNTY.
TODAY, I REACHED OUT TO D-N-R FOR AN INTERVIEW.
THEY SAID NO ONE WAS AVAILABLE TO CHAT WITH ME BECAUSE
THEY'RE ALL OVER THE STATE FIGHTING FIRES.
USUALLY D-N-R IS VERY ACCOMMODATING.
WHICH JUST SHOWS HOW ACTIVE THIS FIRE SEASON HAS BEEN.
NATS - FIRE BOSSW4 22
HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF ACRES CHARRED.
MUCH OF THE STATE WAS LITERALLY ON FIRE.
it's been pretty crazy this year, the fire season
started early and very hot
ERIC JOHNSON IS THE MAN IN THE COCKPIT...
ive been fighting fires out at deer park now for 24
HE'S THE PILOT OF THE FIRE BOSS - A WATER-DROPPING
PLANE USED TO ATTACK FIRES FROM ABOVE.
in the fire boss, the tank area is between the engine
and the cockpit, it's an 800 galloon hopper
WE CAUGHT UP WITH ERIC AROUND THE SAME TIME.
HE LOGGED ABOUT 30 HOURS THEN.
BUT THIS YEAR.
we are about 90 hours on this airplane
THAT'S THREE TIMES AS MUCH.
IN SPOKANE COUNTY.
USUALLY 415 ACRES BURN DURING THE ENTIRE YEAR.
BUT IN 2014.
11-THOUSAND ACRES TORCHED THE COUNTY JUST IN JULY.
i don't think anyone really anticipated it coming
on as hard as it did
IT'S ONE OF THE BUSIEST FIRE SEASONS ERIC HAS EVER
THIS 1,600 GALLOON PLANE GOT HERE TWO WEEKS AGO.
IT'S ON CONTRACT WITH THE FOREST SERVICE.
it's a national resource go whoever needs it, they
got to go through the main site in boise and then
ERIC WILL BE SPENDING MORE HOURS IN THE SKY.
BUT HE DOESN'T WANT TO GUESS HOW MANY...
that's one thing i learned in 24 years.
you never predict a fire season.
you just be ready when the bell goes off
THE FIRE BOSS PLANE IS ON A 60-DAY CONTRACT WITH D-N-R.
THAT ENDS SEPTEMBER 1ST BUT COULD BE EXTENDED.
