ANOTHER SHOOTING ON THE DECONESS MEDICAL CENTER CAMPUS.
ONLY THIS TIME.
THE PERSON FIRING THE GUN WAS A CORRECTIONS DEPUTY.
THE OFFICER WAS GUARDING THIS MAN, CAMERON A.
TREVINO, WHEN THE 26 YEAR OLD JAIL INMATE TRIED TO
KXLY FOUR'S JEFF HUMPHREY JOINS US IN THE STUDIO WITH
MORE ON WHAT HAPPENED.
TREVINO WAS IN A ROOM UP ON THE EIGHTH FLOOR WHERE
HE WAS AWAITING SURGERY FOR SOME SORT OF MEDICAL PROBLEM
WHEN HE TRIED TO ESCAPE ABOUT TWO A.M.
THE ARMED CORRECTIONS DEPUTY CHASED HIM DOWN THE STAIRWELL
TO A FOURTH FLOOR HALLWAY AND TOOK TREVINO BACK IN
CUSTODY AFTER FIRING A SINGLE SHOT.
MOST OF HIS CONVICTIONS HAVE COME IN FEDERAL COURT
BECAUSE MOST OF HIS CRIMES WHERE COMMITTED ON INDIAN
BUT LAST FRIDAY TREVINO WAS IN NORTH SPOKANE WHERE
HE ALLEGEDLY THREATENED A GANG MEMBER AT GUNPOINT.
THIS MAN WHO DOESN'T WANT TO BE IDENTIFIED CALLED
WITNESS 06;18 and i had jumped up and looked out and
i saw a guy jumping out of his car with a pistol in
his hand, ran across the street and ran down the alley
POLICE SAY TREVINO THREATENED A MAN STANDING IN THIS
BACK YARD WITH A PISTOL, SAYING HE WAS GOING TO SHOOT
HIM BECAUSE THE INTENDED TARGET HAD GIVEN TREVENIO'S
WITNESS 08;20 i was still on the line with police
and i said hey he's still pointing that gun and man
they were out here like that.automatic weapons from
the police came out and they took him right down.they
had him 08;30
BUT BEFORE TREVINO COULD MAKE TODAY'S COURT APPEARANCE
ON ASSAULT AND FELON IN POSSESSION OF A FIREARMS CHARGE,
HE DEVELOPED A MEDICAL PROBLEM AND TAKEN UNDER GUARD
THEN ABOUT TWO A.M.
THIS MORNING, POLICE SAY TREVINO TRIED TO ESCAPE.
ERIC OLSEN/SPOKANE POLICE DEPT.
10;54 a corrections officer chased him down several
flights of stairs, they got into a struggle on the
fourth floor and the corrections officer fired one
round, no one was hit by the round and the prisoner
was taken safely back into custody.
TREVINO HAD GOOD REASON TO WANT TO ESCAPE.
IN ADDITION TO HIS LATEST GUN CHARGE, FEDERAL PROSECUTORS
WERE ABOUT TO CANCEL HIS PAROLE FOR VIOLATING THE
CONDITIONS OF HIS RELEASE.
TREVINO HAS NOT BE CHARGED FOR ASSAULTING THE CORRECTIONS
DEPUTY OR TRYING TO ESCAPE.
BUT THAT FIRST DEGREE ASSAULT AND WEAPONS CHARGE HAS
BOOSTED HIS BOND TO 150 THOUSAND DOLLARS.
MARSHALL'S OFFICE WILL LIKELY SOON ASK THAT HE BE
HELD WITHOUT ANY BOND AT ALL.
AND JEFF THIS CORRECTIONS DEPUTY'S USE OF FORCE UNDER
WELL AS HOW TREVINO WAS IN A POSITION TO RUN AWAY
FROM THE DEPUTY UP ON THE EIGHT FLOOR AND WHETHER
OR NOT HE WAS IN HANDCUFFS AT THE TIME.
BUT YOU SHOULD KNOW, OR AT LEAST THE CROOKS SHOULD
KNOW, A SUPREME COURT DECISION CALLED TENNESSEE VERSUS
GARNER DOES ALLOW OFFICERS TO USE DEADLY FORCE DURING
ESCAPE ATTEMPTS IF INNOCENT PEOPLE, LIKE THE PATIENTS
AND STAFF IN THIS HOSPITAL ARE IN DANGER.
