THE WORK OF WSU SPOKANE, PROVIDENCE HEALTH CARE AND
THE EMPIRE HEALTH FOUNDATION.
IS PAYING OFF.
FOR YEARS ALL THREE ENTITIES HAVE WORKED TO BRING
MORE MEDICAL RESIDENCES TO SPOKANE.
IN ORDER TO GROW THE NUMBER OF DOCTORS IN THE AREA.
KXLY 4'S CAITI CURREY IS WORKING FOR YOU WITH MORE
DETAILS ON WHAT THESE DOCTORS-IN-TRAINING WILL DO
FOR THE COMMUNITY.
Caiti W12 25
Six new medical residence started working in Spokane
this week, and where that number sounds fairly small,
the impact they will have in Spokane is huge.
TRYING TO MAKE A DOCTORS APPOINTMENT CAN BE FRUSTRATING.
IT'S FRIGHTENING HEARING THAT YOU'RE UNABLE TO SEE
YOUR DOCTOR FOR MONTHS.
AND THE ANNOYANCE DOESN'T JUST IMPACT PATIENCE.
Todd Brooking, PROVIDENCE
It's a hard thing to see people wait around and say.
I can't see my doctor for three months, that's impossible
for our community.
It is not okay.
THE DOCTOR SHORTAGE IN SPOKANE AND SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES
IS ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE.
Todd Brooking:19W14 25
In the next five years our community is going to have
about 30 percent of the family doctors retire.
THAT IS WHY PROVIDENCE HEALTH CARE.
WSU SPOKANE .
AND THE EMPIRE HEALTH FOUNDATION.
WORKED TOGETHER TO GET FEDERAL FUNDING.
TO BRING IN MORE MEDICAL RESIDENTS.
Antony Chiang, Empire Health OrganizationW15 26
The existing system is basically maxed out.
This is a new funding source that we've tapped into
at the national level that's allowing us to add new
doctors in training.
AND STATISTICS SHOW DOCTORS PRACTICE WHERE THEY ARE
Todd BrookingW16 25
When we train the doctors around here 80 percent stay
around here or the inland northwest, so we're bringing
them into our community and keeping them in our community.
WHERE THE SIX ADDITIONAL RESIDENTS IS PROGRESS.
INCREASING THE NUMBER OF RESIDENTS IN SPOKANE FROM
74 TO 80...
Antony Chiang, Empire Health Organization W17 25
We have nearly 16-hundred residents.
one thousand six hundred residents.
being trained in Washington State.
BUT IF THE FUNDING FOR MEDICAL RESIDENTS CONTINUES
TO GROW HERE IS SPOKANE...
THE INCREASE OF RESIDENTS WILL GROW EXPONENTIALLY.
Robert Maudlin, PROVIDENCE HEALTH CARE W18 26
we will have 119 residents training in Spokane, that's
a 60 some odd increase in the number of residents.
TODD BROOKING W19 25
Everybody has seen Grey's Anoatomy, they knows what
a resident is, what we're doing here is we're traiing
them and we're keeping them around this area
