TRAGEDY NARROWLY AVOIDED ON THE SPOKANE RIVER THIS
AFTERNOON AFTER A RAFT FLIPS THROWING A FAMILY WITH
YOUNG CHILDREN INTO THE RIVER.
KXLY 4'S JOHN HENDRICKS WORKING FOR YOU WITH WHY YOU
NEED TO BE PREPARED IF YOU'RE HEADED ON TO THE WATER.
A Family of seven thrown into the Spokane River here
this afternoon, it comes as a warning if you plan
to head out this summer.
HIGH ABOVE THE BOWL AND PITCHER ON THE SPOKANE RIVER.
YOU CAN HEAR IT'S POWER.
THIS AFTERNOON IT WOULD PROVE TOO MUCH FOR A FAMILY
OF SEVEN WITH FIVE YOUNG KIDS RANGING IN AGE FROM
6 TO 12 YEARS OLD.
We were just praying that they would all come out
safe and we are really thankful they did.
NAOMI HALE AND HER FAMILY WATCHED AS THE RAFT ZOOMED
We were all on the bridge and we saw them rafting
and we thought oh that's cool and we were all waving
at them as they went under.
BUT THAT'S WHEN AN ENJOYABLE AFTERNOON TURNED INTO
We saw it flip over and we were very scared for them
and we were trying to figure out what we could do
to help but we were on the bridge so we called 911.
SPOKANE FIREFIGHTERS SAY THIS SENARIO IS FAR TO COMMON
ON THE RIVER AS THE WEATHER WARMS UP.
We have fall hazards with the rocks and then the water
current, and we are just going to be busy this summer,
we're busy every year.
THAT'S WHY THEY'RE PLEADING WITH YOU TO COOL OFF AND
BE PREPARED FOR THE POWER OF THE RIVER.
We've had people from our team get sucked down in
even with lifevests on and so we just want to make
it very clear to anybody on the water that life vests
SAYING THIS FAMILY WAS SMART AND AVOIDED A MUCH WORSE
In this case wearing the life vest saved those children.
