AN AMAZINING WATER RESCUE THIS MORNING IN THE SPOKANE
RIVER, ALL CAUGHT ON CAMERA .
I'M AARON LUNA.
NADINE IS OFF.
THAT RESCUE BEGAN AFTER A MAN WAS SPOTTED FLOATING
UPSTREAM OF THE DIVISION STREET BRIDGE.
JOHN HENDRICKS HERE NOW WITH THE WHAT HAPPENED.
THE VIDEO OF THE RESCUE IS AMAZING.
BUT THE STORY BEHIND IT MUCH MORE IMPRESSIVE...
A SPOKANE POLICE OFFICER LITTERALLY JUMPING INTO ACTION
TO SAVE A MAN'S LIFE.
THE SPOKANE RIVER.
COLD AND POWERFUL THIS TIME OF YEAR.
FOR ONE MAN IT WOULD NEARLY TAKE HIS LIFE THIS MORNING.
We needed to get to him right away
AN ALERT OFFICER IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME
WOULD BECOME A HERO.
I could just barely see his head kind of floating,
a couple of times his head just went under the water
and there was some people yelling and pointing saying
he's over here, he's over here.
OFFICER BRUCE PALMER WITH SPOKANE P-D WAS NEAR DIVISION
WHEN HE HEARD THE CALL FOR A WATER RESCUE.
He was right out in the middle so then I'm thinking
how are we going to get to this guy and is he going
to be able to stay afloat.
HE SPOTTED THE RED LION RIVER POOL AND TOOK OFF RUNNING.
HE JUMPED THE 6-FOOT FENCE.
AND GRABBED THE LIFE PRESEVER.
I knew our best shot was just to get above him on
the bridge lower the life ring down to him and hopefully
he would be strong enough to be able to grab it in
that cold water.
THE MAN, EXHAUSTED AND COLD FLOATED IN TO THE WAITING
The rope wasn't long enough and so we were just barely
hanging onto the end of the rope and that's where
I had the over officers helping me and then the fire
department got there and they were helping as well.
HE WAS BROUGHT TO SHORE WHERE HE WAS GREATED BY RESCUERS.
LOADED INTO AN AWAITING AMBULANCE AND TAKEN TO THE
Yeah I think we saved his life, he was very close
to not making it.
I SPOKE WITH SPOKANE POLICE THIS AFTERNOON AND THEY
ARE STILL TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHY THE MAN WAS IN
THE RIVER IN THE FIRST PLACE.
THEY TELL ME HE IS EXPECTED TO BE JUST FINE.
KXLY 4 NEWS.
