WORTH IT OR WASTE OF MONEY?
THAT'S THE QUESTION TONIGHT
OVER THE S-T-A PLAZA RENOVATION.
THE BOARD VOTED LAST WEEK TO SPEND 4-POINT-7-MILLION
ON ITS REMODEL.
THAT MONEY COMES FROM SALES TAX COLLECTIONS.
KXLY4'S KYLEE CRUZ IS WORKING FOR YOU TONIGHT WITH
A LOOK AT THE DESIGN, AND - WHAT STA RIDERS THINK
OF THE PLANNED MAKEOVER.
SPOKANE TRANSIT ADMITS THE PLAZA HAS A LOT OF EMPTY
BUT S-T-A HOPES TO MAKE IT MORE INVITING TO MORE PEOPLE.
NOT JUST THOSE WHO RIDE THE BUS.
i would probably grade it a C
like a C-
A PASSING GRADE...
NATS @ - BUS DRIVING OFF11
BUT CERTAINLY, NOT A GLOWING REVIEW FOR THE BUS PLAZA
IN THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN.
i think it needs to be updated
it just doesn't look good from the outside in, it's
just not really presentable
S-T-A CEO E.
SUSAN MEYER ADMITS THE 90S BUILDING NEVER LIVED UP
TO ITS ORIGINAL VISION.
the community didn't come into the building, it was
only for transit riders so we had this very large
unproductive beautiful building
A $4.7-MILLION DOLLAR PLAN TO SPRUCE UP THE SPACE
AND MOVE ALL S-T-A FUNCTIONS DOWNSTAIRS.
PLUS, ADD FOUR RETAIL SPACES AND BUILD BATHROOMS ON
THE FIRST FLOOR.
our goal is to make it functional, both for our transit
riders and for the community

THE WATERFALL WILL BE REMOVED.
THE ESCALATORS RELOCATED.
moving the escalators has the function of creating
a much more open space so security will be able to
see everyone easily
S-T-A SET ASIDE MONEY FOR THE PROJECT IN 2008 - THEN
THE RECESSION HIT, AND THE PROJECT WAS PUT ON HOLD.
BUT IS THE COST TOO MUCH?
no i don't think so, not in this current day in age
i don't really think it's a waste of money, i actually
think it's going to something where more people would
feel comfortable at
THIS IS WHAT IT WILL LOOK LIKE.
A NEW DESIGN FOR AN OLD SPACE.
WILL THIS DO THE TRICK AND ATTRACT MORE PEOPLE - NOT
ONLY TIME WILL TELL.
CONSTRUCTION WILL START ON THE FIRST FLOOR NEXT MAY
AND LAST 15 MONTHS.
THE PROJECT IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETE SEPTEMBER 20-16.
