WITH TAKE OFF.
OFFICIALS SAY KENNETH BERGER.
WAS AN EXPERIENCED PILOT.
WHO HAD BEEN FLYING FOR MANY YEARS.
He had flown over with his wife to do some recreation
this weekend and was staying in Steamboat Rock State
Around five in the evening Berger was taking off in
his SeaRey two person amphibious plane.
It is a pontoon plane similar to the one shown here.
According to northwest flight school....it is referred
to as an experimental plane.
Berger bought the kit.
And built it himself.
He was attempting to take off from the water and he
was gaining speed in order to get the lift he needed
to get off the water
EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED NEXT IS STILL UNCLEAR
IF IT WAS LAKE CONDITIONS, THE PLANE, OR OPERATOR
He struck a wave or had some difficulty causing the
plane to go down.
BERGER WAS SUBMERGED UNDER WATER.
There was some near by boaters who rushed over to
help they dove in and released him from his seat belt
and brought him to surface.
IT ONLY TOOK 20 MINUTES FOR BERGER'S PLANE TO SINK
WITNESSES ESTIMATE THAT BERGER WAS UNDER WATER FOR
ROUGHLY SIX MINUTES BEFORE HE WAS PULLED FROM THE
PARAMEDICS TRIED TO REVIVE HIM.
BUT HE DIED AT THE SCENE.
BERGER'S BODY WAS TAKEN TO THE GRANT COUNTY CORONORS
OFFICE FOR AN AUTOPSY.
