DOMA COFFEE ROASTING COMPANY WAS NAMED AFTER THE OWNERS'
TWO SONS... DOMINIC AND MARCO.
BUT IN ADDITION TO THE CLEVER NAME... AND ROASTING
GREAT COFFEE... THE COMPANY GOES TO GREAT LENGTHS
..TO BE SUSTAINABLE AND ENVIRONMENTALLY SOUND. DEREK
DEIS HAS THE DETAILS IN THIS WEEK'S EDITION OF "MADE
IN THE NORTHWEST."
DOMA COFFEE ROASTING COMPANY HAS BEEN HOUSED IN THIS
BUILDING IN POST FALLS SINCE 2005... BUT THE COMPANY
STARTED IN THE GARAGE OF OWNERS TERRY PATANO AND REBECCA
HURLEN PATANO BACK IN 2000.
put a coffee roaster in there and started roasting
coffee, taking the extra beans, adding them to the
compost, until he developed vito's blend."
THAT'S STILL DOMA'S BEST SELLING COFFEE. BUT THE
COMPANY HAD NO BUSINESS PLAN... AND GREW VERY SLOWLY...
UNTIL REBECCA DECIDED TO HELP HER HUSBAND RESHAPE
i got involved about the time that we needed to eat
something other than potato soup (laughs)."
AND EVEN THOUGH IT'S GROWN QUITE A BIT... DOMA STILL
CONSIDERS ITSELF A SMALL COFFEE ROASTER. BUT IT'S
COMMITMENT TO BEING ENVIRONMENTALLY SOUND IS WHAT
SEPARATES IT FROM OTHERS. REBECCA SAYS IT'S THE FOUNDATION
OF THE WAY SHE AND TERRY LIVES THEIR LIVES.
"sustainability in the company means from the way
that we buy our green coffee, all the way through
the purchases that we make for our packaging, for
any supplies that we may buy for the company."
DOMA IS PART OF COOPERATIVE COFFEES... A CO-OP THAT
ALLOWS THE COMPANY TO BUY ITS GREEN COFFEE FROM...
AND DEVELOP RELATIONSHIPS WITH... SMALL SCALE FARMERS
IN COUNTRIES LIKE MEXICO, PERA AND SUMATRA.
"the ability for us to travel and meet face to face
with our farmers, to break bread with them, to learn
about their life, has been, for us, life changing."
DOMA WAS THE FIRST CERTIFIED ORGANIC COFFEE ROASTER
IN IDAHO. IT ROASTS ALL OF ITS COFFEE IN THIS SMART
ROASTER... WHICH NOT ONLY ROASTS CONSISTENTLY... BUT
ALSO USES 80-PERCENT LESS GAS.
the fact that we were able to pay our gas bill with
the savings, or pay the loan on the loring smart roaster
with the savings of our gas bill, was a great bonus."
EVEN DOMA'S PACKAGING IS SUSTAINABLE. A 14-DAY WINDOW
FOR ITS COMPOSTABLE BAGS MATCHES THE LENGTH OF TIME
ITS COFFEE STAYS THE FRESHEST. AND EVEN THE DESIGNS
HAVE WON LOCAL AWARDS.
"award winning coffee and award winning packaging."
a few weeks ago, we told you about doma's parternship
with selkirk abbey brewery, making guilt belgian style
porter. well, they're also partnering with dry fly
distillery to make this whiskey barrel aged coffee
that not only tastes great, but it smells amazing,
we had no idea how many people out there are whiskey
lovers. we just play in the world of coffee lovers.
so for now, everyone out there who is a whiskey lover,
we have a great marriage."
AND THE COMPANY CONTINUES TO HAVE A GREAT MARRIAGE
WITH ITS CUSTOMERS... FOR THE WAY ITS COFFEE TASTES...
AND THE WAY IT DOES BUSINESS.
"we started in business to do something we're passionate
about and to do it the right way."
AND THAT WILL ALWAYS BE DOMA'S FOUNDATION.
