THIS COLD WEATHER IS ALSO FORCING SCHOOLS
TO MAKE CHANGES TO KEEP KIDS SAFE
KXLY'S ALLIE NORTON IS LIVE AT HOLMES
ELEMENTARY WITH WHAT THEY'RE DOING FOR STUDENTS.
IF YOU DROVE BY THIS SCHOOL TODAY YOU
PROBABLY DIDN'T SEE ANY KIDS ON THE PLAYGROUND.
THAT'S BECAUSE ON DAYS LIKE THIS
I'TS INDOOR RECESS FOR MOST SCHOOLS.
HOWEVER, SOME OF THE LOW INCOME SCHOOLS
LIKE THIS ONE HAVE OTHER FACTORS TO CONSIDER.
LIKE A LOT SCHOOLS IN THE SPOKANE
DISTRICT, HOLMES ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HAS MORE TO
THINK ABOUT WHEN THE FROSTY WEATHER ROLLS IN.
SOT/ STEVE BARNES- Holmes Elementary School Principal @-
A concern that I have is really to and from school.
PRINCIPAL STEVE BARNES SAYS THAT SOME
PARENTS SIMPLY CAN'T AFFORD WARM CLOTHES.
SOT/ STEVE BARNES- Holmes Elementary School Principal @-39
We had a little girl that had a little
tank top on today so we got her a
little sweatshirt, a little home sweatshirt to keep her warm.
THE SCHOOL HAS A CLOSET READY FOR INSTANCES LIKE THESE.
THE ITEMS CATER TO STUDENTS IN
KINDERGARTEN TO SIXTH GRADE AND HAVE
BEEN GENEROUSLY DONATED FROM PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY.
BARNES SAYS IT'S A PROGRAM THAT'S NECESSARY.
SOT/ STEVE BARNES- Holmes Elementary School Principal @
we provide that because kids need to be dress appropriately
for the cold to be successful and to be safe.
BARNES ADDS THAT ONCE THE STUDENT ARE AT SCHOOL,
HE CAN MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE KEPT WARM.
AND WHEN IT GETS DOWN INTO THE
TEENS THE STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO STAY INSIDE.
NATS OF THE INTERCOM TO TEACHERS
THEY CAN PLAY ON COMPUTERS OR BOARD GAMES.
THEY ALSO CAN DO HOMEWORK OR JUST CHAT WITH FRIENDS.
MONET WILDS SAYS THOSE ACTIVITES ARE
FUN, BUT SHE'D RATHER BE OUTSIDE.
SOT/ MONET WILDS - 6th Grader @:
Cause outside you get more active, you
get fresh air, inside you're locked in.
HOWEVER, HER CLASSMATE TUCKER MCLAUGHLIN
WOULD RATHER AVOID THE COLD.
SOT/ TUCKER MCLAUGHLIN- 6th Grader @-
I usually just sit and talk with my
friends and occassionaly I'll do a computer or something.
I'M GOING TO HAVE TO AGREE WITH TUCKER ON THIS ON.
I DEFINITELY WOULD RATHER BE INSIDE AT THIS POINT.
IT'S FROSTY OUT HERE.
PRINCIPAL STEVE BARNES SAYS THAT THEY'LL
LIKELY HAVE INDOOR RECESS FOR THE
REST OF THE WEEK BECAUSE OF THESE TEMPERATURES.
