The plan to spruce up Hillyard is moving forward. A $1.7 million dollar gymnastics facility is anticipated to move into the community in November.
“When we looked at where it was at right off the north-south freeway, it just seemed like a perfect location," Dynamic Gymnastics Owner Adana Harris said.
The current facility on North Division will pack up and move southeast to 5512 N. Havana Street. Harris said it's been her dream to move into a bigger facility for the last three years.
“It's going to be nice to have for everyone to have breathing room to do what they need to do to get to the next level," Harris said.
Now it's all becoming a reality. The new facility will also have a preschool, dance studio and a Jui-Jitsu style class for both kids and adults.
"The building is sitting on the property, so it's ready to be put up, the ground is prepped, so we're ready," Harris said.
Residents in Hillyard are also excited for the move because now there will be more opportunities for kids.
"I think the kids will benefit by it big time,” Jystina Hunter said. “It will give them something to do and keep them out of trouble."
Right now there's a skate park, public pool and community center in Hillyard. Parents in the area said that the more options there are, the less likely kids will get in trouble.
"They get very bored and get in the wrong crowd and terrorize things,” Chelsie Schoen said.
This gym is a small piece of a bigger picture. There's been a recent effort to clean up the industrial part called “The Yard,” to create business and job opportunities. The community was even awarded $100,000 to create a business plan.
"We thought it was a great opportunity to get on board to put in nice, new family friendly things," Harris said.
Dynamic Gymnastics currently has around 600 students and offers 800 different classes. Harris hopes the move will allow more classes for all ages of students. She also hopes to employ 35 people.
