A new bill being considered in the Washington legislature would increase the limits on cell phone use while driving.

Senate bill 6227 would make holding a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle a traffic violation. Right now, drivers can use their phones while stopped at intersections. The bill would expand the definitions of handheld uses to ban texting and email use.

The bill would also increase the penalties of using your cell phone while driving. Additional violations would receive twice the penalty and the violations would go on our driving records for insurance purposes. The bill would also add distracted driving questions to Department of Licensing exams.

What do you think about the proposed changes? Do we need additional cell phone rules? Or are the bans on texting while driving and the required “hands free” devices enough to curb distracted drivers?
