Secret Service code names through history

Since the Secret Service now scrambles its radio communications, there’s no longer much of a security reason for giving presidents and candidates code names, but they are still used out of tradition. Here are some of the not-so-secret code names White House seekers and those close to them have received over the years.

Vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan picked “Bowhunter” for his name. Not coincidentally, Ryan is an archer who enjoys bowhunting deer. Ryan’s wife, Janna, goes by “Buttercup.”
