A Billings woman who pleaded guilty to using Social Security benefits meant for her son's care to support her drug habit has been sentenced to 18 months in prison and ordered to pay $80,000 in restitution.
The Billings Gazette reports U.S. District Judge Sam Haddon sentenced 28-year-old Renee Rachelle Voorhis in Helena on Monday.
Court records said the Social Security Administration awarded Voorhis disability benefits on behalf of a son born in 2004.
Last year, Voorhis' father told the agency he and his wife had been raising the boy since October 2005 without any help from Voorhis, who he said was a drug addict.
Court records say Voorhis admitted to using the money for her own living expenses and to buy drugs.
