VANCOUVER, Wash. -

A woman has died in a house fire in Vancouver.

She was reportedly trapped inside a bedroom about 10 a.m. Friday, and she was removed by firefighters who cut a hole near a window while the single-story house was still in flames.

Fire Department Battalion Chief Steve Eldred confirmed the death to The Columbian.

Neighbors told KGW the woman's son tried to break into the home with an ax to save his mother.

A second alarm was called for the fire, which brought dozens of firefighters and seven fire department vehicles to the scene.

The fire reportedly started in the kitchen and spread out of control.
