A Helena woman who pleaded guilty to driving drunk and killing two people in a head-on crash near East Helena has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
District Judge Kathy Seeley sentenced 22-year-old Arielle Michelle Schescke on Tuesday to 40 years in the Montana Women's Prison with 20 suspended. Schescke earlier pleaded guilty to two counts of vehicular homicide in the April 30 deaths of 16-year-old Katherine Smith of Helena and her grandmother, 51-year-old Mildred Katherine Richard.
Prosecutors said Schescke was intoxicated and driving on the wrong side of U.S. Highway 12 near East Helena when she struck the car carrying Smith and Richard.
A man in an eastbound truck swerved to avoid a collision, but investigators said Richard didn't have enough time to swerve out of the way.
