A 21-year-old woman charged with murder and attempted murder in a 2012 grocery store shooting that injured two men and fatally wounded a third has been found not guilty by reason of insanity.
The News Tribune reports that Thursday's verdict means Laura Sorensen will be sent to Western State Hospital, perhaps for the rest of her life.
Deputy Prosecutor Lori Kooiman says the decision to accept an insanity defense was rare and difficult. According to court documents, Sorensen thought she was hunting pedophiles when she walked into the Peninsula Market near Gig Harbor, Wash., in August 2012 and shot the three men.
David Long of Wauna (Wanna) died three months after he was shot.
Sorensen's family says she has a long history of mental illness.
