SELAH, Wash. -

As chinook salmon make their way up the Yakima River this spring, a few are taking an unusual route at Roza Dam where Yakama Nation Fisheries is testing new technology -- a vacuum tube.

Working with Bellevue-based Whooshh Innovations, the tribe is studying a system that uses a flexible sleeve and gentle suction to send salmon 40 feet from the dam's fish collection facility into a tanker truck.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reports the technology eventually could help fish pass over and around Northwest dams.
