Renovation work on the Salt Creek Tunnel on Highway 58 west of Willamette Pass is not expected to be finished until October 2014, a full year behind schedule.
The delay came as no surprise to the state Department of Transportation.
The Register-Guard newspaper (http://is.gd/9Jbyl2 ) has obtained documents showing a department manager raised concerns about a delay in October of last year, well before private contractor Capital Concrete Construction acknowledged the project wouldn't meet the deadline.
The $9.4 million project involves replacing the small-raised platforms that lead in and out of the mountainside tunnel, as well as lowering the roadway itself.
The delay means another spring and summer of partial daytime closures.
The state and the contractor have traded accusations about who's to blame for the missed deadline.
