EVERETT, Wash. -

The Snohomish County Council backed away from a proposal Monday to ban new home construction within a half-mile of known landslide hazards.

Council Chairman Dave Somers said such a building ban would have made most of the unincorporated areas of the county off-limits.

The Daily Herald reports the council will take at least two more weeks to decide whether to make emergency land use changes in response to the March 22 Oso mudslide.
