TACOMA, Wash. -

A $1 million bail has been set for a marijuana activist and consultant charged with a 1991 fatal shooting prosecutors say happened during a drug deal.

The Pierce County prosecutor's office says 51-year-old Michael Schaef pleaded not guilty yesterday to first-degree murder charges stemming from the death of Jerald Iafrati on May 6, 1991.

Charging papers say Iafrati and his girlfriend pulled up to Schaef's home to buy a large amount of marijuana. Instead, Schaef and an accomplice robbed Iafrati of thousands of dollars and shot him in the chest during a struggle.

Prosecutors say Schaef's wife at the time arranged the meeting.

The charges against Schaef were filed after his ex-wife agreed to talk to detectives about the case.
