The company that makes and sells a sports supplement called Craze has suspended production and sales.
New York-based Driven Sports posted a statement on its website Tuesday disclosing it had seized production of Craze months ago to investigate reports about the safety of the product.
Earlier this week, a team of American and European scientists published a paper in the journal Drug Testing and Analysis reporting how research identified a chemical cousin of methamphetamine in samples of Craze.
USA Today reported the story Wednesday, months after a newspaper's own investigation revealed that tests of the pre-workout powder by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency also found amphetamine-like compounds in Craze.
Company officials say Craze is safe when used responsibly and that their own tests show no evidence of controlled substances.
