TACOMA, Wash. -

The ex-wife of a retired Tacoma police detective with Alzheimer's is accused of spending thousands of dollars of his money without his permission.

Rhoda Ramirez, who also is a former cop, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to identity theft and forgery charges.

The News Tribune reports she was led out of Pierce County Superior Court in handcuffs, although she was later expected to post $10,000 bail.

The 52-year-old Ramirez moved back in with her ex-husband after their divorce. He had authorized her to write checks from his account for household expenses.

She's accused of spending as much as $30,000 on other expenses, such as her daughter's rent, car payments, insurance and cellphones. Her lawyer, Barbara Corey, says the husband approved of all the spending.
