Newly filed court documents say the first victim of a March 19 crime spree that later took the life of a northern California sheriff's deputy was found seated at his Eugene, Ore., dining room table with two gunshot wounds to the head.
A statement filed by Eugene Detective Jennifer Curry says detectives also found one of 79-year-old George Wasson's fingers on the floor, with an injury consistent with a bullet wound. Three bullet holes were found in a bookcase.
The Register-Guard reports (http://is.gd/GeiqaZ ) that firefighters found Wasson's body after a neighbor reported flames coming from the retired anthropology instructor's house.
Later that day, authorities believe 32-year-old Ricardo Chaney fatally shot Mendocino County Deputy Ricky Del Fiorentino before being killed by another officer.
Eugene police identified Chaney as a person of interest in Wasson's death. Police say the two were acquainted.
