Kalispell, MT -

A Kalispell man escaped injury when his experimental airplane made a hard landing shortly after taking off from the Kalispell City Airport.

Joe Angle says he was about 200 feet off the ground Tuesday morning when his engine quit. He tried to land on a dirt-and-gravel road, but ended up landing just off the roadway.

The nose gear was torn off his plane and the landing gear broke.

Angle said the engine quit because a spark plug popped out.

The forced landing will be reported to the National Transportation Safety Board.
