A jury has been seated for the trial of an 86-year-old Central Oregon man accused of killing his 83-year-old wife.
The Bulletin newspaper of Bend reports that eight women and four men were chosen to decide whether Lawrence Loeffler is guilty or innocent in the shooting death of his wife Betty Jane Loeffler.
Loeffler called 9-1-1 on Jan. 28 to report that he had shot his wife in the head at their home on Old Mill Road outside La Pine.
According to court documents, Loeffler provided investigators with two versions of the circumstances.
He initially said the couple was fighting, possibly about laundry, and he feared for his life so he shot her. During a second interview, the frail man who uses oxygen tanks to breathe said he overheard his wife on the phone with her daughter and became convinced the women were plotting to kill him.
