A new company is taking over the taxi operations at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport just as other options such as ride-sharing services are beginning to surge.
The Seattle Times reports that Eastside for Hire has signed a five-year, $22.5 million contract to take over taxi duties at the airport from Puget Sound Dispatch and Yellow Cab on Oct. 1.
Sea-Tac spokesman Perry Cooper said airport users should not notice the change, though taxis will look different. Taxis are required to be available to customers within five minutes.
The contract was signed as Uber and Lyft gain popularity at the airport. The services began offering rides in late March and in August, more than 70,000 people fetched rides from ride-sharing services, just a few hundred fewer than those who took taxis.
