The leader of Multnomah County government is resigning after weeks of turbulence over his affair with an employee.
Jeff Cogen released a statement Friday saying he would step down as chairman of the county board of commissioners.
In July, he acknowledged he'd had a long affair with Sonia Manhas, county health department director of policy and planning.
The four other commissioners called on him to quit, but he initially refused. He said he wanted to wait until the state attorney general's office finished investigating whether he'd broken any laws.
On Friday, he said that, after reflection, he concluded that remaining in the job was counter to the standards he'd espoused as an elected official.
Manhas has already resigned.
