Bozeman, MT -

The University of Montana's athletic programs still leads state schools in generating revenue, but Montana State University is gaining ground.

The Bozeman Daily Chronicle reports that annual reports submitted to the Montana Board of Regents show the Bobcats have narrowed the revenue gap with the Grizzlies over the past five years.

The reports show the University of Montana programs raised $20 million in the fiscal year ending June 2013, compared to Montana State's $18 million.

Five years ago, the Bobcats raised 84 cents for every $1 raised by the Grizzlies. Last year, that rose to 90 cents for every $1.

MSU athletics director Peter Fields says Montana State is not necessarily looking to keep up with the Grizzlies, but with the entire Big Sky Conference and national trends.
