The Port of Seattle is starting work on a master plan to guide development over the next 20 years.

The airport is looking to accommodate an increasing number of passengers, many from international flights. Airport planning director Elizabeth Leavitt says by the end of this year the airport expects to have handled more than 34 million travelers -- an increase of more than 4 percent over last year.

The Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce reports the master plan would be the first since the 1997 plan that guided building a third runway.

The airport already plans for projects worth about $1.5 billion. They include a new area for international arrivals, renovation of the north satellite terminal with Alaska Airlines, and a new hotel.
