Yellowstone National Park, WY -

More rain is helping to control five wildfires burning in mostly remote areas of Yellowstone National Park.

Even so, park officials say they continue to monitor the fires for flare-ups, and areas north of Fishing Bridge remain closed. That includes the Mud Volcano area and trails in the Hayden Valley.

Yellowstone officials said Friday the 12-square-mile Alum Fire remains active around its perimeter but isn't expanding much. The fire is five miles north of Lake Village.

Thick smoke from the fire caused officials to briefly close the road between Fishing Bridge and Canyon Village on Tuesday but the fire has since calmed down.

Four other fires in Yellowstone also have shown little activity after rain fell across the park Wednesday and Thursday. More rain from scattered thunderstorms is forecast.
