A 32-year-old Missoula man has pleaded guilty but mentally ill to a home invasion attack in which a Dixon man was stabbed to death and his wife's throat was cut.
Nathan Lee William Calvert entered his pleas to deliberate homicide and attempted deliberate homicide on Tuesday in District Court in Thompson Falls.
Calvert said he suffers from mental illness and had not taken his medication for several months before stabbing 61-year-old Doug Morigeau to death on Dec. 6. Calvert told District Judge Kim Christopher he felt like he was falling into a black hole and was paranoid that others were trying to kill him.
Morigeau's wife, Cheryl, was able to run to a neighbor's house and get help after her throat was cut.
Sentencing is set for Nov. 5.
