CENTRALIA, Wash. -

A motorcyclist who suffered brain damage after colliding with a dump truck in a Lewis County construction zone has been awarded $18.5 million in damages.

The Chronicle reports  that a judge approved the large sum for Scott Bliss Wednesday, citing what he called "extraordinary injuries" in the case.

The 46-year-old Rochester man had sued the state Department of Transportation, a department contractor and the dump truck driver in June 2015.

Bliss claims the driver made an illegal U-turn and blocked an Interstate 5 onramp before colliding with his motorcycle.

Bliss had originally sought $30 million in damages and the case was scheduled for trial in October. His attorney says they reached the settlement after determining a jury would likely hold Bliss at least partially responsible for the crash.
