POULSBO, Wash. -

Fire officials say a 90-year-old man died Thursday in a fire at his Poulsbo, Wash., home despite the efforts of neighbors who tried to rescue him.

The Kitsap Sun reports that two 19-year-old neighbors, Ben Johnson and Will Clay, say they located the man in the kitchen but were unable to reach him because of the flames.

They used a garden hose to try to suppress the fire until firefighters arrived.

Poulsbo Fire Department spokeswoman Jody Matson says the man's 58-year-old son last saw his father when he left for work Thursday morning. She says the elderly man also had a caregiver, who was not there when the fire broke out.

The victim's name was not immediately released.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
