Two protesters dangling on ropes have unfurled a banner near the top of the state Capitol protesting logging on state land.
The group Cascadia Forest Defenders says two members secured ropes and descended Thursday morning from the top of the structure in a demonstration against state policies allowing more clear-cutting in the Elliott State Forest.
The Salem Statesman Journal says the protesters were on a tour at the Capitol that went to the golden Oregon Pioneer statue atop the dome.
Kate Armstrong, an organizer for the group, said the two people are experienced climbers. She wouldn't name them. The group has been involved in a number of logging protests in Salem.
Armstrong said the climbers expect to be detained and didn't bring provisions for a lengthy stay.
