Portland, OR -

Gov. John Kitzhaber says Sept. 30 will be the date for a special session of the Legislature if he can round up enough votes for a combination of pension cuts, tax increase and small-business tax cuts.

Kitzhaber said in a statement Wednesday that "it's time to call the question." He's been trying for months to reach a deal that would raise new tax revenue to boost funding for schools and mental health treatment while lowering costs of public-employee pensions.

The governor says "a solution is within reach," but it only makes sense to call the Legislature into session if lawmakers are willing to act.

Senate President Peter Courtney, a Salem Democrat, says he'll work as hard as he can to find a compromise that can win passage.
