GREAT FALLS, Mont. -

A state judge has reduced the bail for a Great Falls man charged with killing his wife after a request from the victim's father.

The Great Falls Tribune reports District Judge Dirk Sandefur called the bail hearing for Roy Edward Scott after James Wells asked that Scott's bail be reduced so Scott can work and help the family pay bills.

Scott has pleaded not guilty to deliberate homicide in the March death of 32-year-old Stephanie Wells.

Sandefur on Monday reduced Scott's bail from $1 million to $250,000.

Scott has said he and Stephanie Wells were fighting and that he used a "bear hugging technique" to stop her from hitting and kicking him. He said he did that for 10 to 15 minutes and then noticed she wasn't breathing.
