RENTON, Wash. -

A man who climbed a fence and cut a copper wire on a transformer at a Puget Sound Energy substation near Renton suffered severe electrical burns.

Eastside Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Dave McDaniel says King County deputies first responded to a report of an explosion about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday at the substation between Renton and Issaquah.

Firefighters removed the injured man. McDaniel says he was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with second- and third-degree burns over 60 percent of his body.

Puget Sound Energy says power went out for about 2,800 customers and was restored by 6:30 a.m.

Utility spokesman Ray Lane says it's assumed the man broke in attempting to steal the copper wire to sell for scrap.
