An Idaho man who sexually abused a 14-year-old member of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation has been sentenced to 6 1/2 years in federal prison.
Thomas Lee Bear of Lewiston pleaded guilty earlier this year to sexual abuse of a minor. The 31-year-old admitted using a social networking website to persuade the girl to have sex with him on the reservation.
U.S. Attorney Amanda Marshall said in a statement Thursday that it is "repugnant" for men to use the Internet to prey upon teenage girls, and the rate of sexual abuse against girls in Indian Country is tragically high.
U.S. District Judge Anna J. Brown handed down the sentence in Portland. After completing his prison term, Bear must register as a sex offender and undergo treatment.
