SEATTLE -

Hundreds of King County rape kits that have been awaiting testing for years have been sent to the State Crime Lab.

KOMO-TV reports that the King County Sherriff's office has sent nearly 250 kits to the crime lab but only 32 have been tested.

King County Sheriff John Urquhart says funding means there aren't enough scientists to test the hair, blood and semen that have been kept on ice for so long.

For years the rape kits were not tested because detectives found there was no evidentiary value to do so. State law no longer allows detectives to make that decision and now all kits must be tested within 30 days.
