Some of the 250 people who attended a Hanford State of the Site meeting Tuesday night in Richland questioned Energy Department officials about their response to vapors that have recently sickened about two dozen workers.

The manager of the department's Office of River Protection, Kevin Smith, told the crowd he is committed to protecting workers from fumes from the underground waste storage tanks.

The Tri-City Herald reports others at the meeting pressed the department to reclassify 220 square miles of the nuclear reservation as an addition to the Hanford Reach National Monument, to be preserved as habitat.
