YAKIMA, Wash. -

A man who shot two gang members at a swimming hole on the Naches River pleaded guilty Monday in Yakima to first-degree murder charges.

In return for the plea from 20-year-old Lameiro Efren Flores, Yakima County prosecutors agreed to recommend a sentence of 40 years, rather than life in prison.

Flores originally claimed self-defense in shooting 17-year-old Jose G. Avilez and 18-year-old Jobany Martinez in August of last year because he said they had assaulted him in the past and he feared another attack.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reports Avilez and Martinez were documented gang members, but Flores had no history of gang affiliation.
