Medford, OR -

One of two Carson Helicopter officials indicted in the 2008 helicopter crash that killed nine people in California pleaded guilty Monday to a fraud charge in federal court in Medford.

The plea from 46-year-old Levi Phillips of Grants Pass came in an agreement with the government that requires him to testify against the other man, 42-year-old Steven Metheny of Central Point. Both were indicted in January on charges they schemed to defraud the Forest Service.

The Mail Tribune reports Phillips faces up to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced in April.

Federal prosecutors said the company provided false information about the performance capabilities of its helicopters to win a $20 million firefighters contract.
