Glacier National Park reopened Thursday with the limited services that are typically available in mid-October.
Park spokeswoman Denise Germann says workers were removing barriers and planned to have 29 miles of the Going-to-the-Sun road open from West Glacier to Big Bend as soon rocks could be swept off the roadway.
Germann says the Apgar campground is open and the Apgar visitor's center is open on the weekends, but many other seasonal businesses had closed before the Oct. 1 government shutdown.
Visits by school groups will resume while park employees begin preparing the park and its facilities for winter.
Germann says crews are removing guardrails on the Going-to-the-Sun above Big Bend and installing 600 snow poles that allow the snow plow drivers to find the roadway in the spring.
